IAN: Thursday 5/24/2018 Plants from the "Buy Before I Die" Shelf

Whenever I go to Lowe’s or the grocery store, I always check the shelf in the garden section where they put the plants I call “Buy before I die” plants.  They didn’t get enough water, or they got dropped and have broken stems, or they got burned by the sun and the flowers are crispy.  They mostly are beyond my abilities to resurrect from the almost dead but occasionally I find one that could live with a little help and I buy it.

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!

IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

I can hardly wait for this to bloom!

This is a canna lily.  I bought it when all of its leaves were pretty damaged, trimmed them and tried it in a few places, mostly with little luck.  Then, last year, when Lil Zen and I were on our annual road trip we went to a tropical garden and I saw this was in the water.  I moved this one and now it is sprouting quite nicely.  It cost me about $2.  Good deal.

Another Mother’s Day plant, a rose bush, grocery store

This little rose bush is coming back from some bug damage.  It is a survivor though and will bloom again soon.  It cost $1 on the “Buy Me” shelf.

A May Day rose bush from Lowe’s

This plant just needed water and it was FULL of buds.  It has been blooming since I got it, about 2 weeks ago, and it shows no sign of slowing down.  The roses are coral colored and lovely small flowers.  I can see this on a trellis in a few years.  It was a whooping $3.

A palm of some sort from Lowe’s

This palm has never looked any better but it has grown about 3 times its size in the last couple of years.  It always has yellow fronds on it and new shoots so I guess that is its style.  This was $2.

I don’t plant annuals because I want things that last and are drought tolerant but these roses and the azaleas bring a welcome spot of color in the succulent garden and I save a buck and sometimes a plant life.  Its a good deal.

How’s your garden, whatever that may be?
