DK Quilt Guild: A place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too.
I made this quilt by starting with 4 large half square triangles of black and orange, left over from snowballing the edges of the Circus Elephant’s Quilt. They were too large to toss so I decided to try a method of making blocks that I had learned at a workshop at my guild recently. I only had half the beginning blocks and when it came to the last sewing and cutting, the blocks I was left with were not quite like what we had made in class. However, I slogged along and as I put them together, I came to really like what different patterns I was able to make. I settled on this design with the large X in the middle. Then I searched my brain for some border and remembered making this kind for my Kaleidoscope quilts so here it is. I like working with the points. When I got the borders on top and bottom, they reminded me of the crenelated tops of castle walls, so this became the Coat of Arms quilt. I quilted each piece using just an echo straight stitch design, ¼ in in from each seam. I turned the back onto the front, rolled the edges under, and top stitched it down for the binding. It is small, only meant to be a lap quilt. I hope to start doing some larger work now because I feel I am getting better at this whole thing!
