DK Quilt Guild: I think I've got it!

When I come to the place where I have to clean up my quilt work area, I take my basket of scraps and cut them into either a 10in square, a 5 in square or a 2 ½ in strip and put them in the appropriate tote.  I use them for making quilts I see on YouTube videos that call for pre cuts.  This quilt uses 10 in squares.  I found it on Facebook, posting by someone I knew from here.  It was a lot larger in the demo but I only make these smaller ones at this time.  I also turned one of the squares so that the block makes a star rather that a “box”. All the blocks are the same but the “star” is not as noticeable in some.

I have little control over what colors I use due to the scrappiness of my scraps.  I was able to find 10 solids and 10 prints that went together pretty well so this is the size i ended up with.  It is 45x53, lap or kid sized.

In March, I went on a cruise to Hawaii that offered quilting classes on the days we were at sea.  I took one in machine quilting and trapunto.  It gave me a basic skill set to work from and I have since taken another machine quilting class offered by a speaker we had at our guild.  Both of these experiences has helped me greatly and I am now rather pleased with the advances I have made, as shown here in a close up of some of the blocks.

This quilt is actually quite a breakthrough for me.  I was able to make accurate blocks that fit together well.  I was able to do a credible job of quilting, using 6 different patterns.  And last but certainly not least for me, the binding came out even, flat, and well sewn down.  The one fly in the ointment is that one of the marking pens I used did not come out of one of the fabrics completely.  It stuck in one of the greens but I was able to scrub it out, but in the print in the block in the upper left, it would not come out completely and left a little ghost shadow of color.  Fortunately, it is in a highly colored block and will not be very noticeable.

I enjoyed making this and quilting it.  I am working up to quilting a queen sized one for my bed.  That day gets closer all the time.

What are you working on?  Show us!  We want pictures.

I’ll will be away until after 5p so will check in when I get back.
