My quilt guild, Los Angeles County Quilters Guild, will be holding their bi-annual quilt show in October in Long Beach. We will display over 200 never before shown quilts in a beautiful Greek Church. There will be authentic Greek food, raffles for baskets of goodies, a flea market for those little treasures, and a silent auction. It is usually well attended and well spoken of in our circles and we are proud of all our work.
I have several quilts set aside for the silent auction but they also can use other items, so I am making a few of these aprons. The original pattern did not call for it to be reversible, but if you put a pocket on each side, you can flip the v shaped collar from one side to the other and viola! it is another color. The pattern did want you to have a two sided apron but I decided to add the second pocket and leave the collar loose so it could be flipped.
Here is the other side and it is opened so you can see the construction. its a big square with handles and pockets!
You need (2) 25in squares, one from each fabric.
From fabric 1, you also need 4 strips 3inx20½in, sewn into 2 strips 40in long for the waist ties and (1) pocket piece 6inx12 1/2in and (1) pocket piece 7inx12 1/2in.
From fabric 2, you will need (2) strips 3inx22in for neck ties and (1) pocket piece 6inx12 1/2in and (1) pocket piece 7inx12 1/2in.
Fold all tie strips 1/4in in on each side, then fold in half and top stitch closed.
Take (1) pocket piece from each color, using a 6in and a 7in. Sew the right sides together, matching the top first and then bottom so that when you turn it right side out, you will have a little border of the larger piece on the top and bottom of the finished pocket. Make 2nd pocket the same way. Turn the side edges in and iron. I folded the pockets into 1/3rds and used the top 1/3rd crease to line it up with the center line and centered top to bottom. Then I top stitched them to their respective sides on both sides and the bottom, also in the middle to make two pockets.
Now you are ready to put it together. The neck ties go 7in down from the top center point and the waist ties go 4½ in up from the side points. Pin them onto the right side of apron front, facing into the middle. Top with right side down of back side of apron, stitch leaving an opening to turn finished piece.
Turn right side out, iron and top stitch edges. Fold top 6in down, onto front side. The pattern called for a decorative button but I just left it loose so it could go to the other side.
I hope you like this little tutorial and will try it if the opportunity arises. it is inexpensive, relatively quick and easy and rather cute, if I say so myself!
Don’t forget, we are always on the look out for writers for this space. We would love to hear from you and see what you are doing. Leave a note in comments if you would like to share with us.
