IAN:Thursday 2/13/2025 Try not to let this be you.

A little over 3 weeks ago, a man swiftly took my ATM card out of my hand at an outdoor ATM and handed me back a card that was not mine in the best close up hand magic I have seen in years before making an escape.  I knew it was wrong. The bank was open and I went in immediately and reported this event.

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!

IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

In the little time it took for the bank manager to block the card and check my account, he had taken $1500 from my checking account and $300 from my savings account.  She gave me the number for the fraud department and I made my claims.  I received emails confirming the reports and investigations.  They put $300 back into my savings account within a few days, marking it as temporary pending the outcome of the investigations.  Last Friday, they put the $1500 back into my checking account with the same info.

Tuesday, I got emails saying the investigations were completed and the deposits were permanent.  My bank account confirmed this too.  I waited to tell you this until I knew the outcome.

I tell you this to tell you this: He was waiting for a certain circumstance to do this.  First, although I don’t use the tap feature, this ATM seized on it and opened to the place to put in your pin.  The card was still in my hand and I put in the pin.  I know now that he spied to get it when the situation was right and my card was not in the machine as it usually would have been.  If it had been, he would not have been able to take it.  He drove around to another ATM at the same bank immediately and took whatever he could get.  I know the bank has video of him taking the card out of my hand and using it.

We all hear “Be careful” from our friends and family when we got out among ‘em, but it rarely stays in the front of our minds.  I was not being aware enough of my surroundings and how close a strange man was to me so quickly.  I am lucky he only meant to rob me and not hurt me.  Try not to let this be you.
