DK Quilt Guild is a place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too.

Greetings, Quilters!

When I arrived at my new office assignment in 1994, I brought my desk chair with me from my last assignment.  I had taken it from place to place for years; it was mine as far as I was concerned and by that time, no one knew any better!  When I retired in 2009, I wheeled the contents of my desk out of the office on my chair, and put it all in my car.  I was asked by the supervisor about the chair.  I asked her if she had ever seen M.A.S.H and she said she had.  I reminded her that the doctors arrived in a jeep and then when they left at the end of the movie, they drove it away.  When asked, Radar said they had brought it with them, it was theirs. My chair was like that; I brought it with me.  I left with it.

It has been my computer desk chair until today but it really needed to be replaced.  I bought a new one.  I have a seal point Siamese mix cat and she lives on my chair.  She leaves tons o light grey fur too.  What does this have to do with quilting?  Well, today I am making covers for both the seat and the back.  They will keep her from kneading the fabric as well as keeping the fur at bay.  I took a quilt workshop class Thursday and made these leaves, using the reverse applique technique.  I will use them for the seat back cover side that shows. That way, I get some use out of these samples, I can show them at guild next month as a finished project, and I don’t have to make more.  I really want to make a larger piece with lots of autumn leaves on whole cloth so I want to move on.

This technique is very easy to learn and has many applications.  I will post the finished covers when they are done.  If anyone is interested in details of the technique, let me know.  It is reverse applique, with the color pieces underneath the background, showing through a cut out design.  The Hmong are famous for doing it with the tiniest designs.

What are you doing this weekend?  Let us know.
