DK Quilt Guild: Some of The Many Ways to Make Flying Geese

There are two quilt blocks that are, to me, the foundation of quilting.  They are universally loved, used constantly, so versatile, just the essence of blocks-the half square triangle and the flying geese.  If you can make these two blocks, the world is yours. Today, I will focus on the Flying Geese. For more info, see below the commercial.  Oh, and sign up to write a diary and give Pam a break.

DK Quilt Guild is a place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too.

Would you like to write a future DK Quilt Guild diary?  We NEED writers! Your diary can be elaborate and full of photos, a simple story of your own quilting history or that of someone you love, a discussion of a current project or a technique you're learning, new adventures... You could post quilt retreat-day recipes (things like crockpot meals, so food appears without much attention from you)... We could do show and tell or open thread, also, but either way, we need diarists to host. It is EASY if you're willing to take the chance. Please join in! Please volunteer within the comments or you can send Pam from Calif a kosmail.

There a a ton of rulers on the market to make Flying Geese.  I have two, one by Eleanor Burns and one byLazy Girl Designs Flying Geese. Both make four geese in one operation.  I have used both of them and prefer the Lazy Girl one if I use a ruler.  But there are a few different angles on this block on YouTube.  Here is a small sampling.

This one is so quick where a lot of others show the same thing but take a long time.  You don’t have to fold the edges back and make cathedral windows of course.  But they are very easy to make this way too. I used this method in the borders on the front page picture.

This one uses the technique that the Lazy Girl ruler is for but shows you how to make it without the ruler.  I like that you can make them of whatever size you like.

x YouTube Video

This one uses a roll of pre printed paper.  I have used Triangle on a Roll but not the Flying Geese.

x YouTube Video

This last one shows how to draft your own free form flying geese.  It does not show how to cut or sew them but I imagine you get the idea by now.

I hope you find these videos entertaining and of some use.  Show us what you’ve got going on, even if there are no geese flying on it.
