I belong to a small quilt guild that meets during the day, once a month. There are less than 100 dues paying members, some of whom don’t come to meetings regularly, and a percentage of whom do not quilt anymore. They come for the social aspects, the support, the friendship. We probably have between 60-80 attendees depending on the season, the weather, and the interest in the speaker that month. We have a quilt show every 2 years at the local Greek Orthodox Church where the snack bar sells church-made Greek cuisine to the delight of all. I am told by visitors that we are among the friendliest, nicest guilds around and we have a lot of fun.
DK Quilt Guild is a place for quilters to gather, share ideas, projects, and to make the world a better place, one quilt at a time. Join us and share your thoughts, projects, questions, and tips. Quilters here are at many different levels of skill. Beginners and non-quilters are welcome, too.
Would you like to write a future DK Quilt Guild diary? We NEED writers! Your diary can be elaborate and full of photos, a simple story of your own quilting history or that of someone you love, a discussion of a current project or a technique you're learning, new adventures... You could post quilt retreat-day recipes (things like crockpot meals, so food appears without much attention from you)... We could do show and tell or open thread, also, but either way, we need diarists to host. It is EASY if you're willing to take the chance. Please join in! Please volunteer within the comments or you can send Pam from Calif a kosmail.
We have a committee of 2 who go around to the few local quilt stores left and get donations of gift certificates, fat quarters, patterns, thread, magazines, little tools, etc. They hand these out at the meetings as door prizes and members also donate these same items from our stash which never seems to lessen regardless of what we give away. Maybe its like love, it only multiplies. We usually have between 20-25 goodies But I digress…
In any case, a few months ago, I handed out the fabrics seen in the above quilt to one of our non sewing members during door prizes. There were 6 half yard cuts, beautifully matched autumn colors. We agreed they were gorgeous and I went on handing things out. But at break, I decided to find Edna and tell her I would use them if she wanted to give them to me since she doesn’t sew. But I was having a time finding her when suddenly we spied each other, across a crowded room, like Tony and Maria. (Or not.) As I approached her, she had her hand out to me with the bundle in it, saying “You should take these, you will use them.” So here they are, in a 48 x 53 quilt, ready for donation. I added the black with gold ribbon fabric and the white. I think the black is a little busy for this but by the time I had decided that, it was too late. I sashed the blocks because it broke up the “busy” a little and gave the eye a chance to rest. But I like it fine now that it is finished except for the binding.
I saw a video of Fons and Porter doing this pattern, they called it 21st Century Snail. It was easy to figure out how to make the block, these are 16 in square. They made a fast quilt and it is just echo stitched ¼ in from the seam on all the orange bits.
