Most of the people I know have cell phones, most of those phones are “smart” phones. I have An IPhone 5C,a not so new one that does more than I understand so it is fine for me. One of my favorite features is the navigation program. I can say “Siri, take me home.” where ever I am (if I have service) and he will tell me how to get home. I have never been able to understand a real map. I was not able to orient myself to it and proceed in a logical and informed manner. I was still lost but I knew what the street names should be.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care! IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!Monday

Most often though, I use a navigation program called “Waze”. You may have heard of it or use it yourself. It is very popular. Here in So Cal, some people are not impressed with it because it may route a freeway full of traffic through your neighborhood if there is some major blockage on the freeway. People complain that they can’t get out of their drive ways because of all the traffic. I can see as how that would be a giant pain in the patoot.
Recently, I have noticed more traffic coming through my own darn neighborhood, cutting through from one large street to another. The newcomers drive faster than most of the locals but then we live here and they are anxious to just pass through. But mostly, it doesn’t effect me. Why, you may ask? Well, I live on the only cul-de-sac in the neighborhood! I have to go out and around to come and go. I am used to it, it makes walking Razzle easy when I only have time for a quick walk; we go around the curve and right back. But I never considered it to be a boon until right now. The traffic does not come onto my street, it doesn’t go anywhere!
I have an Englishman’s voice on my Waze program. He says things funny, like he always puts an “R” in Santa Ana, which as you can see, has no “R”. He says Santa Rana. It makes me laugh. He also has problems with Sepulveda but on the whole, I like him a lot. He can get me where I need to go and home again. He also has the option to direct you on foot, by bike, or on public transportation. He is quite handy for the directionally challenged, like me.
Do you use programs like this?
