IAN: Thursday 11/21/2024 The Curse of a Smart Dog

I have to say that I wanted a smart dog after losing Rubi, dog of my heart.  I had never considered the intelligence of a dog to be an important point before her, but after she was gone I realized how I loved and respected her for her thoughts and actions.  I wanted another one like her.  I went to the pound based on a photo of this dog as a 6 month old puppy with floppy ears and wanted to see her.  I started on an adventure.

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!

IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

She was very quiet and stayed closed to the front of her cage when I went to see her.  I stayed for hours, just talking to  her and watching her.  Something about her made me decide to take her home.  I almost missed getting her as another woman was after me in line with Razzle’s picture on her clip board.  I had already signed and paid but she said she wanted her for her 82 year old mother. I told her I would call her if it didn’t work out.  I had no idea how Razzle really was.  That lady has no idea to this day I saved her mother’s life.  Razzle would have killed her, not out of animus but out of energy and cleverness.

Now, I am trying to give medications to her for her allergies and osteoarthritis.  She hates to take them and I used to try to hide them.  This time for the first two days, she took them in chunks of hot dogs but only from Bill who never gave her meds before but she was slightly suspicious of the hand out.  She would not entertain the thought of me atall.  She won’t take a chuck of hot dog or cheese from me because she remembers who has always given her meds.  The third day, she wouldn’t take it from Bill either and spit the pills out.

New trick was pills in balls of white bread.  She likes the crusts and the bread and took them from Bill for 2 days, and then no more.  I had to take over because my hand fits into her mouth.  I got them down her.

Then I decided to make slightly wet bread dough balls by putting it in the blender with a little water. I then wrapped each pill very well without touching the pill and then smothered them in a small amount of wet cat food.  Boy, howdee!  She didn’t spend half a second looking at or smelling that mixture.  She wolfed it down and was thrilled to get it.

So far, that has been working.  I think a combo of the smelly cat food and the total coverage of each pill in wet dough is keeping her happy.

I do not let her see me doing this.  I don’t touch the medicine basket until I put her outside for a few minutes.  I don’t touch the pills but use hemostats to handle them.  I make sure they are air tight and covered in cat food.  And it is just a little so she eats it very quickly.

I am hoping this lasts because she will have to have these meds for the rest of her life. She is not suspicious of cat food atall and has spend the last 10 years trying to get some.

We’ll see how it goes.  Have a good day.
