The water color sketch above is my homemade gift card. I posted about this some years ago but can’t find anything so here it is again. In a comment back and forth with bjbjbj, I said I was planning on using them this year and he said it sounded interesting, he might like it. So I promised info and here it is.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

The drawing on the front of the card is done with a Sharpie. The style is called neurographic art and there are lots of videos about how to do it. It is a kind of meditation style. I drew it on water color paper, the size of a playing card, then used water color pencils and a water brush to paint it. Pencils are easier to use than standard water colors because they stay where you put them until you put the water brush to it and spread the color. You draw it dark, close to the lines and leave the centers open and the color shades itself as it spreads. Try it, you’ll have fun.
The back of the card explains what it is typed on paper that I cut to make the “envelope” to put the money in. You can see that in the 3rd picture. I glue it on the two sides and bottom, leaving it open to put the money in.
My thought is it is always the right color even if it is not a large amount. It never expires and there is no fee to get or use it. They can use it almost anywhere in the USA. (There are cashless businesses but I don’t do business with them.) And you can personalize each one, or copy and print one and put it on a playing card. You can cut out old Christmas cards and glue the results onto a playing card. You can make them any old size you want to, there are no gift card art police. I just learned to do this on cards when I traded them as Artist Trading Cards.
Let me know if you decide to do this. I would love to see your art.
